Fireplace Facelift and Decor

Week 2 Day 3 in Quarantine

Sometimes a little paint can go a long way. If you’ve hesitated until now to do a facelift in a room or rooms, this may just be the time to do it inexpensively.

When we purchased the house in November 2019, we ran into some bright yellow walls and a red/ maroon/ dark orange accent wall around the fireplace. I honestly couldn’t tell you what color it was lol My hubby says I’m colorblind, but I beg to differ. I will be uploading some photos, so you can be the judge.

The mantel of the fireplace itself was also ivory/ eggshell in color. I think it was meant to go along with the yellow walls, and accent wall? lol I think.

After we purchase the house, I knew that we wanted to redo the fireplace (potentially get an elector insert), remove the tile and replace the mantel altogether. I think a lot of my dislike for the fireplace may have come from the accent wall behind it, after looking at it on a daily bases, I think at some point there was a strong desire to just rip the entire thing out and start from scratch haha However, I decided that maybe just a little paint can make a difference, and luckily it did.

In December, I started off by painting only the mantel. It was around the holidays and I figured a “redish” wall against a white mantel may not look so bad. I ended up taping off the mental, priming it first, and then painted it white or “Snowbound” by Sherwin William in satin eg-shel finish in the Emerald (SW 7004).

I that repainting the fireplace mantel really helped improve the look of the wall, and in January I finally decided to complete the entire look and repaint the entire accent wall. I’m not going to lie, I started to get a little attached lol but definitely not attached enough to keep it around.

It took about 3-4 coats of primer, and 2 coats of the “Requisite Gray” by Sherwin Williams in satin eg-shel finish in the Emerald (SW 7023).

  1. ladder- I purchased this ladder for 25$ at an antique shop and after sanding it down, I gave it this look with some antique white stain. Similar items below (priced from highest to lowest)
